Hugo Viana could look to take manager Rúben Amorim with him to Manchester City if he takes over as director of football.

That’s according to Diogo Boa Alma via O Jogo, who believes it could be a double move from Sporting if Manchester City end up targeting their director of football.

Viana has been linked with a move to the Etihad this week following the announcement that Txiki Begiristain will be leaving his role at the club next summer.

He’ll be leaving big shoes to fill, and several reports have indicated that Viana, who has been impressing in Portugal since taking charge as director of football in September 2018.

Since then, he’s done impressive work, particularly in the transfer market, where Sporting are one of the keenest and smartest operators in the business.

This has attracted Manchester City, who reports say have put Viana at the top of their list of options to replace Begiristain.

They may need to make another major change next summer, though, as Pep Guardiola’s contract is set to come to an end. He’s yet to commit to a new deal and it’s possible he will step down and end his nine-year reign.

And Boa Alma believes if that happens, Manchester City will target Amorim alongside Viana next summer.

“I have no doubt whatsoever that he (Viana) could be a good choice for Manchester City. He has done a great job at Sporting. I believe he has all the conditions to do the same at a club like City,” he said.

“I’m biased talking about Hugo Viana. I’m his friend, I’ve known him for a long time. He is a discreet person, he works in the shadows, but he works like few others.

“The qualities he has are on display at Sporting, with the work that has been done. He has already won two championships and has signed good players. It’s a good option.

“It is normal, it is no longer just the players being associated with big clubs, it is also the managers and coaches.

“I believe he will also want to take Rúben Amorim. In addition to a professional relationship, they also have an excellent personal relationship.”
