Despite the change of manager at Aston Villa in the early stages of the season, Morgan Sanson’s situation at Villa Park barely improved.

A forgotten man under Steven Gerrard, the Frenchman did earn some minutes with Unai Emery at the helm, but it certainly wasn’t enough to make him want to stick around, so he didn’t.

A loan to Strasbourg during the January transfer window was arranged, and L’Equipe reveal that Aston Villa are still paying a very hefty chunk of his wages while he plays in Ligue 1.

The French newspaper published their yearly showcase of what players earn in the French league, and looked at the Strasbourg wage bill.

There, they explain the Aston Villa loanee is being paid €100k/month by the Ligue 1 side, but that’s less than a third of what he is actually on.

This is because the Premier League side are still paying the remaining €260k/month of his €360k/month wage at Villa Park.

If anything, this shows how ready Aston Villa were to, at least temporarily, part ways with the midfielder, who has found a new lease of life in eastern France since his arrival.
