Back in April, following the World Cup draw, Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez joked with his son that Mexico would be ‘easy’ adversaries for Argentina.

Needless to say, Mexico is a huge country with very passionate fans and media, so that didn’t go very well there.

With Argentina losing to Saudi Arabia in the first round, they now need to beat El Tri, and that game has become even bigger.

So it’s now time for people in Mexico to fuel up Martinez’s quotes. One of them is former striker Oribe Peralta, who’s today quoted by outlet El Norte.

“I think that when people speak, it is because they are often afraid. They know that Mexico are not a comfortable rival for them, they know that Mexico are a rival that will give them a fight.”

With El Norte willing to say even more about Martinez, they added a few paragraphs about the goalkeeper, with some shots fired at Aston Villa.

“Emiliano Martínez plays for Aston Villa, a mid-table club in the Premier League. He was almost unknown to Mexicans until that video in which he yelled ‘easy’ when he learned of the World Cup match against El Tri.

“The ‘Dibu’ did not gain notoriety in Argentina either because before the Copa América 2021 the then starter Franco Armani fell ill with Covid-19 and he was brought in. He had a memorable performance, particularly in that semifinal with the “mira que te como” to the Colombians in the penalty shoot-out.”

Since Mexico drew with Poland, they’re also in need of a win against Argentina, and that could make this one of the most interesting games in the World Cup’s group stage.

The Aston Villa star has already shown how much he likes these decisive moments, so let’s see if he’ll be up for the challenge this time.
