Championship side Aston Villa have reportedly made a late attempt to sign Andreas Samaris from Benfica.

Portuguese newspaper Record says the club made an attractive offer, giving him a two-and-a-half-year contract worth €4m net. It sounds like this amount would be paid per season.

The midfielder, however, despite finding the salary interesting, ‘didn’t feel attracted’ by the chance of joining the Championship side, and Record makes sure to say they are currently 10th in the table.

Record doesn’t make clear how much would Aston Villa pay Benfica, since the Eagles would certainly require a fee to let him go now, as his contract only expires at the end of the season.

There should be no need for Aston Villa to be offended, as Samaris has reportedly also rejected an offer to sign for Newcastle United in the Premier League.

The Greek international is now expected to sign a contract extension with Benfica, where he’s been since 2014.

So this looks like one more transfer window where Andreas Samaris gets heavily linked to English clubs, but ends up staying where he is, in a place where he can’t even get the status of a regular starter.
