On March 25th, Tottenham Hotspur’s Rodrigo Bentancur revealed that he’s been playing with a broken toe for the past two to three weeks. He picked up the injury during a training session with the Premier League side, prior to their clash against Crystal Palace.

The Uruguay international featured in the two friendlies against the Basque national side and Ivory Coast in the recently concluded international break.

According to ESPN, the midfielder had ‘received permission’ from Tottenham to represent his country this month.

The 26-year-old has given an interview to the Uruguayan association’s channel, AUF TV, and his comments are relayed by ESPN.

Bentancur missed most of 2023 with a serious knee injury before returning to the pitch last November. He then picked up an ankle injury and was forced to spend a month on the sidelines.

The Tottenham player has now provided a positive update on his fitness.

“After so many injuries, I feel good again. Now I broke my toe in training before the game against Crystal Palace, I’ve been playing with a broken toe for three weeks now, but it was either that or stop and I didn’t want to keep stopping after so many injuries,” he said.

“I was allowed to play with a broken toe, there was no problem because it was a small part of the top, it wasn’t even the fifth, which would have been serious. Now the toe is almost healthy, so it’s fine.”

The South American moved to Europe when Juventus signed him from Boca Juniors in 2017. Since then, he has listed the goals he wants to achieve on a blackboard.

He revealed this when commenting about being given the captain’s armband against the Basque national side and the Ivory Coast.

“It’s a dream, and it was one of our objectives. At home I have a blackboard with goals, from when I was due to arrive in Europe, which I wrote with my uncle Daniel Fernández, who I train with every day and who is my personal trainer. And that was one of the objectives,” Bentancur explained.
