Agustín Rogel is still only 20 years of age but it seems like his career is at a very crucial time.

With a contract expiring at Nacional this summer, the player is determined to leave, even if it means exiting the game altogether. Not so long ago. Rogel was regarded as a great young talent in Uruguay and has represented the country’s U20 team on several occasions, but feels poorly treated by his current club.

Having turned down approaches, including from Leeds United, he’s since found himself sixth choice and is being ostracised for not renewing.

The player’s agent Ariel Krasosuki, has been speaking to Referi in Uruguay, and explained: “Leeds from England offered him some important money, taking him four or five months to the USA. To play there until he had a community passport (an EU passport, meaning no work permit needed, many South Americans get these through European heritage) and then, when he had it, take him to England. That was the economic proposal we had, but we did not want to leave.”

That loyalty hasn’t been rewarded, and interest from Betis and Sevilla didn’t amount to anything concrete, partly because the player and his family haven’t been pushing for a move.

And, in a plan which sounds astonishing given the career on offer in football, it’s stated that if Rogel doesn’t get the right offer this summer he’ll simply continue his university education and leave football behind.

Leeds United will surely continue to be aware of the situation.
