Arsenal were interested in signing Calvin Bassey from Rangers in the summer window, before his eventual move to Ajax.

That’s according to his agent, who has confirmed the Gunners made an approach for the centre-back but didn’t go beyond that.

Bassey joined Ajax in a €23m deal in the summer, with the Dutch side moving quickly to sign him as a replacement for Lisandro Martinez.

The defender had been impressing at Ibrox since arriving on a free transfer from Leicester City in July 2020.

He established himself as a key player for the Scottish side in the intervening two years, starring in both the SPFL and Europe, where Rangers reached the Europa League final last season.

That put him on everyone’s radar, and he was linked with a move to the Premier League before deciding to continue his development in the Netherlands.

One of those interested clubs was Arsenal, according to his agent, but they didn’t go beyond the initial interest phase.

“Arsenal contacted us and we let Rangers know, but they did not follow up,” Tuttomercatoweb report him saying to OwnGoalNigeria.

“We also had interest from Aston Villa and West Ham, but in the end, Ajax presented the best offer not in terms of money, but for his development as they promised regular employment.”
