During the last transfer window we covered reports from France that Leeds United were ‘pressing’ to get a deal done for Montpellier defender William Remy.
It was claimed there were other clubs interested in signing the Frenchman, but Leeds United were pressing the most and initiate talks.
A move to the Championship side didn’t materialise for Remy, but the English club could still have the opportunity to get a deal done in the next window.
Since Leeds United’s interest in Remy this summer his situation at Montpellier hasn’t improved, and has in fact worsened. The 26 year old is not only being left out of the team, but he’s failing to make the match day squad for the Ligue 1 side.
We covered the situation earlier this month, but things have taken a further turn for the worse.
On top of that, the Guingamp match, which Montpellier won 2-0, was in the Coupe de la Ligue, a chance to give fringe players a go. With Remy being ostracised even for that, there’s every chance his Montpellier situation is now so bad he won’t play for the club again.
With Remy’s situation unlikely to change anytime soon this could give Leeds United another chance to sign the player in the next window. Remy can play in central defence or as right back, and his versatility could be a plus for Leeds United.
Opportunity knocks for Leeds United to get the player for free. With a contract running out in June, there’s every chance Montpellier could cut their losses in January and let the defender end his deal then.
