Leeds United goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald would have preferred to stay at Werder Bremen, but he’s still happy to have joined the Yorkshire club, as explained in an interview with a German outlet.
The 27 year old signed for Leeds United in the last window after becoming surplus to requirements at Werder Bremen.
In an interview with Deich Stube, Wiedwald was quizzed about his move to Leeds United, and why he took the decision to leave Werder Bremen: “I would have liked to stay in Bremen. After all, I come from Achim near Bremen and I grew up at Werder. Now I’m happy in England, although not everything is going perfectly.”
Wiedwald’s move to Leeds United has caused a lot of debate in the German media in recent months, with suggestions he was forced out by Werder Bremen coach Alexander Nouri.
It was well documented this summer that Nouri was bringing in Jiri Pavlenka from Slavia Prague to replace Wiedwald as his No.1, despite the Leeds United player being Werder Bremen’s first choice last season.
Wiedwald refused to be second choice behind Pavlenka and subsequently signed for Leeds United.
Wiedwald made an impressive start to the season with Leeds United, which earned him rave reviews in Germany, and fuelled the debate over Werder Bremen’ decision to bring in Pavlenka.
However, that hasn’t continued and Wiedwald isn’t assured of being number one at Elland Road.
