On Sunday evening, Pau Lopez is expected to line up for Espanyol away to Real Madrid. It’s certainly a change from playing for Tottenham’s U21 side and struggling to even get a place on the club’s bench.
Yet, despite Pau not really doing anything at Tottenham, other than helping to cement Mauricio Pochettino’s faith in him, the time in England is seen very positively in Spain.
As part of the build up to Sunday’s La Liga match, AS go through the Espanyol team player by player, and Pau is first. The young goalkeeper’s ‘Erasmus’ year at Tottenham is said to have made him much more mature.
Tottenham couldn’t agree a fee for Pau, but with the player available on a free transfer next summer, there’s every chance Pochettino could return for him. That would then see Michel Vorm leave, and Paulo Gazzaniga as third choice.
But given Pau is again getting a taste of being a starter, and doing well, he may well move elsewhere, and there’s been wider interest from England. Pau could be returning soon, and his performance against Real Madrid today is an opportunity to help that.
