Over the past week, Andre Gones’ supposed failed transfer to Tottenham Hotspur has been covered repeatedly in the Spanish press.
Marca said that after Barcelona rejected an earlier €45m offer from an unnamed club at the start of the summer, they offered Gomes to Tottenham ‘almost free’ to try and remove him from the squad.
Tottenham were even said to be willing to accept clauses, related to guaranteed minutes, to help Mauricio Pochettino get the player.
Gomes is one of a number of players Barcelona failed to move on, including Arda Turan and Rafinha, and the Tottenham links seemed more hopeful than anything else. The English media had started them, and the Spanish media eventually clung to them as a last minute hope.
That almost desperation in Spain underlines Gomes’ difficult time at Barcelona. Disappointing in his first season following the transfer from Valencia, Gomes is very much considered a ‘meh’ player by Barcelona fans.
Mundo Deportivo say this was well exampled when Gomes took to the pitch against Espanyol at the weekend. In what they call a ‘cruel paradox’, Gomes was welcomed as a substitute without the actual welcome but then did well.
Fans were already annoyed he was coming on because of the poor last season. And yet, Gomes actually did ok, but he’s going to find it increasingly hard to come back from how he’s now seen.
It’s accepted these things have got to Andre Gomes, so it’s probably a good job the supposed Tottenham deal came to nothing, because he’d be under an even more critical microscope had he made a late move to the Premier League.
