As reported by Portuguese newspaper A Bola this Wednesday, Everton made an attempt to sign Ivan Marcano from Porto on the last day of the transfer window.
The Toffees obviously didn’t succeed, with both club and player rejecting a transfer which would have to be decided in a hurry.
But the newspaper claimed that, as the defender’s contract is set to expire next summer, Everton could try again in January, this time with a small fee. Porto would be in a fragile position, given the danger of losing Marcano for free next summer.
Marcano’s representative said that there are ‘no negotiations going on’, and ‘some of the talks’ between them and Porto didn’t succeed.
He confirmed that ‘there were many clubs’ trying to sign the defender during the summer window, and Marco ‘doesn’t rule out any possibility’.
The agent is obviously teasing with a transfer now, but as always, the question is if he’s arguing for a better contract or really looking for a way out.
Time will tell, and Everton should be attentive. If the approach from Goodison Park actually happened, then Ronald Koeman should have a good chance of the signing Marcano in January if he hasn’t signed a renewal.
