Everton made a late attempt to sign Iván Marcano from Porto, the Portuguese press reports.

A Bola claims Everton tried to sign the defender in the ‘last moments’ of the transfer window, but Ronald Koeman saw the offer rejected both by club and player.

However, it’s very likely that there will be another attempt for the 30-year-old in January, and that’s when the situation could be on Everton’s side.

Marcano’s contract is expiring at the end of the season, so during the winter market he will be available to sign a pre-contract with any other club.

And even if Everton are in a hurry to get him, Porto would obviously prefer to accept a low amount instead of just seeing him walking a few months later.

The Portuguese side are said to be trying to give the player a new contract, but it hasn’t been easy. The first two offers were rejected, and even though they feel close to an agreement, that’s no guarantee he will sign a new deal.

Certainly a situation to watch for Everton.
