After ten years in England, most of them with Sheffield Wednesday, José Semedo has finally returned to his home country.

The Portuguese midfielder was signed by Vitória de Setúbal on a free transfer this summer, and despite not making his debut yet, he’s created great expectations.

Carlos Carvalhal, who was his last manager at Sheffield Wednesday, has worked at Vitória de Setúbal twice, so was the right person to comment on the transfer.

Speaking on how Semedo can improve his old club, the Portuguese manager said: “He is a legend, an idol at Sheffield. Why? Because he is a team player that any manager in the world would like to have.

“He has a huge motivation, he doesn’t have two faces, playing or not, he is aggressive and he has enormous leadership. He marked me a lot for his balance. He just did not stay in England because he didn’t want to and he knows that he will always have the door open here.”

“The way he takes care of himself, he’ll play until 35, 36 years old. In England he has almost always played as a defensive midfielder but will help wherever Jose Couceiro needs.”

Semedo left Portugal still in 2006 to join Italian side Cagliari, where he only stayed for one year, before being signed by Charlton Athletic.

The player spent four years in London before being signed by the Owls in 2011. He made 167 appearances for Sheffield Wednesday, and as revealed by Carvalhal, only left the club because his wish was to go back to his home country.
