Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has admitted he is unhappy with the number of goals he is conceding at the moment and is working to fix the issue.
The Argentine keeper has been speaking to ESPN, relayed by TLS Diario, about his situation and his constant need for improvement.
The 32-year-old has been spending this international break on the sidelines after being banned by FIFA for offensive gestures made during the last international break.
He was fortunately not missed by the reigning world champions as Geronimo Rulli stepped up his absence, despite Martinez establishing himself as a key man over the last few years with an impressive record of just 19 goals conceded 34 clean sheets in 47 games to date.
That’s an impressive record to say the least but one he’s struggled to match on a club level with Aston Villa. His currently tally for the Villans stands at 204 goals conceded and 57 clean sheets in 168 games.
This season has been particularly tough as he’s conceded nine goals in nine games in all competitions and kept three clean sheets, two of those coming in the Champions League and one in the Premier League.
That clean sheet in the league came in Aston Villa’s 0-0 draw with Manchester United before the international break, something it seems Martinez is less than happy about.
“They are scoring a lot of goals against me in the Premier and it is something that affects me a lot,” he said.
“I am a fan of zero goals, so I work a lot for it. With Javier García (goalkeeper coach) we worked a lot, specifically yesterday, 40 or 50 minutes reacting to the ball, concentrating only on the ball and today the truth was that it was very good for me.
“I am a sucker for continuing to grow, for being the best, for winning everything with Aston Villa; I set out to play in the Champions League with Villa and I was able to achieve it. With the same selection. I have no ceiling; I want to continue growing and I try to show it every weekend.”
