Álvaro Carreras moved from Manchester United to Benfica initially on loan, in a deal which was later made permanent for around €6m.
The left-back struggled initially to force his way into the Liga Portugal club’s side, but things have been much better for him in the current season and the past few weeks have been something of a breakthrough period.
That’s seen claims from Portugal that Manchester United and other big European clubs are keeping an eye on the 21-year-old with a view to making a move in a future window.
The Red Devils scout Benfica routinely anyway, so they’d always be aware of how Álvaro Carreras has been progressing.
When the youngster signed permanently with Benfica it was agreed his release clause would be €50m, however, Manchester United negotiated their own buyback clause at a much lower amount.
Monday’s edition of Record reports that buyback clause stands at €20m, and therefore Benfica are concerned it will be relatively easy for the Premier League club to take the player back.
For Manchester United it’s an interesting opportunity, although they probably want to see Álvaro Carreras keep up a consistent level of form before making any serious move.
