Manchester United’s sale of Scott McTominay has attracted mixed reactions.
He’s already scored twice for Napoli, with one goal coming in Serie A and the other in the Coppa Italia. Manager Antonio Conte has shown a huge amount of trust in McTominay, changing his formation to accommodate the new signing.
Federico Macheda, a one-time Manchester United hero, has now questioned the sale. The Italian spoke to Radio Serie A, as relayed by CalcioNapoli24:
“I’ve known Scott since he was 12. United were wrong to let him go. He came through the youth ranks to the first team and is a great player.”
Under Erik ten Hag last season, McTominay was often the Red Devils’ get-out-of-jail card and scored vital goals that led to the side getting points.
While he did have technical weaknesses while playing deeper, a case can be made for him prolonging Ten Hag’s time at Old Trafford through his goals.
Ten Hag isn’t helped by Zirkzee not scoring since his first match, and others also being unable to find the back of the net.
