West Ham United summer signing Niclas Füllkrug has admitted he joined the Hammers this summer because of an “incredible desire” to take on a new challenge.
The 31-year-old has been speaking on Martin Harniks Podcast ‘Flatterball’ podcast relayed by 90 Min.de.
He moved to West Ham from Borussia Dortmund in a €27m deal at the beginning of August as part of the London club’s big spend to freshen up the squad for manager Julen Lopetegui.
The transfer came as something of a surprise given, he had only been at Borussia Dortmund for a year following a move from Werder Bremen.
It became apparent that Dortmund had other plans for their forward line, though, with the signings of Serhou Guirassy and Maximilian Beier strengthening their forward line.
Füllkrug has been open on the fact that he saw those signings as a sign of a lack of trust in him from the club, something which prompted him to move to West Ham.
There were other motivations, though, and one of those was a desire to play in a new league and experience something different.
“If you are at a point in your career where you can just do what you want, then that is nice,” he said.
“And I just really wanted to take on a new challenge and do something that really took me out of my comfort zone. If I grow from it, then I can mature again and take another step.”
