On Thursday, a very interesting story emerged in Il Messaggero about Liverpool and an interest in Baldé Keita from Lazio.
On paper, it makes a lot of sense. After all, he’s available for somewhere between €20-25m, and is an ideal signing to avoid a repeat situation of this season’s issue when Sadio Mané got injured.
Liverpool’s interest in Virgil van Dijk has been well known, with certain outlets claiming the Southampton defender was very close, yet, just in case that falls through, Jürgen Klopp appears to have an alternative in mind: Stefan De Vrij.
The Dutch centre-back has been expected to leave this summer, and while Manchester United (who reportedly pre-agreed a €35m package last October) were the favourites to sign him, Mourinho has remained quiet since, leading many to believe he’s lost interest.
Since no other club in Italy or Spain is prepared to spend more than €20m on him, this leaves Liverpool as an option if they feel he’s worth spending over that on.
This very much sounds like talks for Keita with a little enquiry about De Vrij, which wouldn’t be the craziest of things to do, especially if they can get both for somewhere around €50m?
Always good to have all your bases covered.
