Pierre Ekwah joined Sunderland in January 2023 and was a regular until the end of last season.
The midfielder lost his place at the Stadium of Light at the start of the season as Régis Le Bris left him out of his plans. This led to Sunderland letting Ekwah join AS Saint-Étienne on loan on last summer deadline day.
Olivier Dall’Oglio was the manager when the Sunderland man arrived at the Ligue 1 club, and Eirik Horneland replaced him in December. DAZN had a chat with the former and Foot Sur 7 have relayed his comments.
The 23-year-old was a regular under Dall’Oglio and has continued to maintain his place in the starting lineup under Horneland. He played over 2,300 minutes from 26 games this season.
Last month, we covered claims from France which stated there are several factors why Saint-Étienne should buy him from the Black Cats. Dall’Oglio has encouraged his former club to retain Le Bris’ reject and has shared reasons for the same.
“Pierre is a young player I knew well at Saint-Étienne. He plays a very important position in front of the defence. With me, he was often tasked with dropping back into the defensive line. He did it well; he’s a disciplined, intelligent player with good technique,” he said.
The former Saint-Étienne manager has highlighted areas where the Sunderland owned player needs to improve.
