Fulham were said to have made an attempt to sign AS Roma’s Matias Soule in the winter transfer window.
The transfer didn’t go through and since then, the versatile attacker has scored three Serie A goals and at the weekend, he scored a stunning long-ranger to hand Roma a point against arch-rivals Lazio.
He is now winning the trust of manager Claudio Ranieri, who is using him more often in the Serie A.
Soule has now spoken to Il Romanista about how things were in the winter and he revealed that Fulham indeed came forward for him. Bologna were also interested.
He said: “Yes, there was Bologna in the last days of the transfer market. I wasn’t playing much, so I asked Ranieri what I should do, and what he thought about it. He told me: ‘Don’t worry. Things aren’t going well now, but you’ll have your opportunities’.
Speaking of the approach from Marco Silva’s side, Soule stated that a chat with Ranieri convinced him to stay at the club from the Italian capital.
“Then at the end of the transfer market another offer arrived, from Fulham, but they told me to stay here. Obviously I didn’t want to leave, but talking to Ranieri helped me.”
This suggests that Fulham perhaps never really had the chance to sign the Argentine, who was intent on staying in Rome and wanted to prove himself at the Giallorossi.
He is now doing just that under Ranieri, after he had a disappointing start to life before the January transfer window opened.
Soule cost Roma an initial fee of €25m and it only makes sense for them to hold on to an important and expensive asset. As for Fulham, the ship has now sailed.
