On Wednesday, we covered a story in Corriere dello Sport that Tottenham had met with Patrik Schick’s agent about a possible move to White Hart Lane. Vincent Janssen’s failure to get enough goals at Spurs has inevitably made the club prime for links with other forwards.
Following the spate of links with bigger clubs around Europe, including Mauricio Pochettino’s side, we speculated it wouldn’t be long before news of Sampdoria trying to hand their new prodigy a new contract would emerge.
Well, lo and behold, Gazzetta dello Sport do just that on Thursday, explaining the club’s president, Massimo Ferrero, had already taken the first steps towards negotiations with the player’s representatives.
The reason behind this is the €25m release clause in Schick’s contract, a very affordable fee for the likes of Tottenham, which Sampdoria would like to increase to €40m before the upcoming transfer window.
With this in place, were a bigger and far richer club to gamble on the 21-year-old in the summer, Sampdoria could pocket a far handsomer fee.
Once again, the pattern is the same: player does well > interest > improved contract > €€€ for both club and player.
So predictable.
