SPAL sporting director Davide Vagnati thinks former Leeds United forward Mirco Antenucci could have achieved much more in his career. The 31-year-old joined SPAL last summer after becoming surplus to requirements at Leeds United.
The SPAL chief said the forward still has the qualities to succeed to Serie A, but feels he could have played in the Italian top flight earlier in his career. Vagnati believes since being released by Leeds United Antenucci has found the right club in SPAL, and is benefiting from his new surroundings.
“He has all the qualities to do well in Serie A. He could definitely have done better in his career. Here in Ferrara he’s found the right environment and found a second youth,” said the SPAL director.
Antenucci has spent his entire career playing in the lower divisions, including the Championship with Leeds United. Many questioned his decision to join newly promoted SPAL when he left Leeds United at the end of last season, but the player is now on the verge of playing in a top flight for the first time.
The Italian side yesterday opened up a eight point lead over third place, and look certain to achieve promotion to Serie A with just four games remaining.
