Now that Steve Bruce has been officially sacked by Newcastle, attention turns to who will be replacing him at St James Park.

The list of candidates for the vacant position is likely to be as long as it is varied, with the job on offer at St James Park one that numerous managers will have their eye on.

One who has already been named among the candidates being considered is Roberto Martinez, who, as we’re sure you know, is currently in charge of the Belgian national team.

His reputation has come on leaps and bounds since taking that job, despite the fact they’ve flattered to deceive in the big games in the big tournaments under his leadership.

Now whether he’s a serious candidate for the Newcastle job or not remains to be seen, but there is one link that people are refusing to ignore; step forward, Graeme Jones.

He’s been working under Steve Bruce since last year and will be taking interim charge after his departure, a fact that people should be taking ‘note’ of, according to RTBF.

That’s because Jones has a longstanding relationship with Martinez, having worked as his assistant during the 2018 World Cup and long before that as well.

Jones was Martinez’s assistant between 2007 and 2018, a spell that saw him follow the Spaniard from Swansea, to Wigan, to Everton and then Belgium. In other words, the two know each other very well.

So much so that Jones would be an ideal person for the Newcastle board to talk to if they wanted any information on the Spanish boss. He’d also be an ideal man to lay the groundwork for his former boss.

Indeed that’s something Belgium based journalist Sacha Tavolieri has even hinted at, commenting, ‘you don’t have to tell me they (Newcastle) won’t try to poach his faithful fried Roberto Martinez’ after Jones was named as interim boss.

Of course, he’s just speculating, but clearly, there is a sense that Jones being at the club could lead to something with the Belgium boss in the coming weeks.
