Last summer saw Tottenham scramble around looking for some defensive reinforcements, and they rightly targeted an unhappy Milan Škriniar, seeing an opportunity where there was one.
The Slovakian defender wasn’t playing anywhere near as much under Antonio Conte as he would have liked, and there was an opening for a transfer, which Daniel Levy tried to capitalise on.
Negotiations took place, and there was a period where it appeared Spurs would get their man before Inter’s asking price proved too big, leading to the London club to back off.
Since then, Škriniar has returned to his old form, making the most of Conte’s decision to move away from a three at the back defence and return to a flat four, where the centre-back feels way more at home.
Škriniar said, relayed by Inter Live: “When one isn’t player, they’re not happy. However, when I happened to be out, I also knew why, because I had so many defects in a three man defence. Tottenham? I wasn’t very happy because I wasn’t playing, but I still wanted to stay at Inter. And thanks to my work, I got my job back”.
It seems the defender never actively pursued a move away from San Siro last summer, but had Inter decided to part ways with him, he probably would have gone along with it, such was his need to play regularly.
He’s got that now, and it seems any talk of a move away is now entirely off the table.
