On deadline day of the January window, Manchester United signed Odion Ighalo from Chinese club Shanghai Greenland Shenhua on loan until the end of the season.
Various reports in the British press explained the Red Devils entered into the market in search of an attacker following Marcus Rashford’s injury setback in January.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also asked his employer (again) to sign a new striker after Manchester United sealed a deal for Bruno Fernandes.
AFC Bournemouth’s Joshua King, Leicester City owned Islam Slimani and a few others were linked with the Old Trafford club before United took the former Watford man on a temporary deal.
Foot Mercato now claims first contact between the English club and Ighalo’s representative took place even before the window opened on January 1st.
In addition to this, the player agreed to join on January 26th, but Shanghai Shenhua’s leaders slowed down the operation.
It’s claimed Manchester United will take care of Ighalo’s ‘entire salary’, meaning they will pay £4.5m for his loan period. This amounts to €5.3m and if bonuses are included, it could rise up to €6.3m. Foot Mercato states it’s a ‘significant investment’ from United.
