The reason for their decision to do so was that the player had already injured his knee when he had arrived, and they felt they shouldn’t have to pay the €10.5m.
Inter Milan weren’t happy about this, deciding to take the matter to FIFA, who ruled in the Serie A club’s favour.
In turn, Sunderland weren’t best pleased with that outcome, so they took the matter to the CAS, which backfired as the Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled in Inter’s favour as well, as reported by L’Equipe on Friday.
This means the Premier League side will have to pay Frank de Boer’s new club the money they should have paid back in the summer of 2015.
Since then, Ricky Alvarez became a free agent and signed for Sampdoria, where he currently plays, picking up two assists in his first four league games.
