Juventus star Leonardo Bonucci was strongly linked with a move to Manchester City this summer, but the Italian defender opted to stay in Italy.

Vincent Kompany’s recent injury has again sparked rumours of Manchester City’s interest in Bonucci, despite reports suggesting the player is in negotiations to sign a new contract.

His former manager Gigi Delneri, who signed him at Juventus, has been speaking to Italian website Tutto Juve and was asked about the possibility of Manchester City reviving their interest in Bonucci.

Delneri insists he is happy Bonucci opted to stay in Italy, and that he is mature enough to make his own choices.

He said: Juventus are a top team, so his choice makes it clear what kind of footballer he is.

“Leo is quite mature and I’m glad he has opted to stay in Italy. It’s fair play for the team that now has a chance to win it all. Tips? I wouldn’t counsel him on anything.”

It’s very unlikely Juventus would consider selling Bonucci during the winter transfer window, and this may be a ship that has sailed.
