Manchester United‘s Diego León will push for a way out in January if the Premier League side won’t promote him to the first team.
The left-back arrived at Old Trafford from Cerro Porteño in July 2025, after turning 18 years of age. There was a lot of excitement in Paraguay over his move to Manchester United.
Prior to moving to Europe, León played 33 matches for Cerro Porteño’s first team. His performances and potential convinced Manchester United to bet on him.
Last season, the youngster made 20 appearances for the Red Devils U21s. He is yet to make his first team debut despite Luke Shaw and Patrick Dorgu being on the sidelines with injuries.
Still awaiting Manchester United breakthrough
In March, the Paraguay international said he would like to become a Manchester United legend.
At that time, he said: “One of my dreams is to make Paraguay proud and to become a legend here in Manchester.”
In August, Diego León’s agent Renato Bittar said his future remains unclear. He had also left the door open for a transfer, but that didn’t happen in the summer window.
Fast forward to October and the representative has now given a fresh interview to ABC Deportes. They took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to relay his comments.
Manchester United decision key for OT stay
Renato Bittar didn’t hesitate to look for a way out for Diego León in the winter market if Manchester United can’t assure him of first team minutes.
“If there isn’t a plan to break into the first team between December and January, we’ll look for a way out for him. A loan somewhere where he can compete, get playing time, and return to Manchester,” he said.
If the fullback can’t make it to the first team, then the option is to stay in England.
“The Championship is an option, as are other European leagues, but we don’t want to leave here. He’s performing well with the U21 team, he’s training well, and his physical condition is excellent,” Bittar explained.
Manchester United have endured a difficult run this season under Michael Carrick. With only two wins and without a win for over a month, the coach’s future remains uncertain.
If the Red Devils bring in a new manager, he has to decide whether to consider León immediately. Carrick’s future can also influence the Paraguayan staying or going out on loan in the next window.
