Antonio Conte is currently without a club and Manchester United could prompt him into getting back into the game.
The Italian left Napoli at the end of last season, having taken them to a second-placed finish in Serie A. He also helped them to the Serie A title in his first season, showing that he is still capable at the highest level.
Conte has never been too far off links with a move to Manchester United. He has previously been mentioned as an option for the club but a move has never materialised.
Now, the idea is gaining traction once again.
Manager would jump at chance
Today’s print edition of Corriere dello Sport has a detailed report on the manager’s situation. Juventus fans are open to the idea of having Conte as their manager again.
Luciano Spalletti’s honeymoon period is over. Questions will be raised of any bad results, especially as they haven’t made a great start to the campaign.
If things don’t go Spalletti’s way, Conte would be considered as an option. While CEO Giovanni Carnevali has denied suggestions of Spalletti being sacked, things can change in the near future.
Conte, at his end, is waiting for possible offers and waiting by the phone. He would consider a move to Manchester United, if the Red Devils step forward for a deal. He has rejected the Italy national team and also turned down an approach from Fenerbahce.
This is because he is awaiting more attractive projects and a move to Old Trafford would be up his street.
Our take: Juve being pushed into move
Claims in Italy seem to be really pushing the boat out for Conte right now. He is desperate to join a new club, especially as he remains very relevant at the highest level after Napoli.
At the same time, Manchester United don’t seem to have any doubts about Michael Carrick’s position at the club. They have won just once in four games but the manager’s position remains secure.
So clearly, the Red Devils’ name is being used to pressure Juve, which could be Conte’s dream club. He wants to take advantage of the uncertainty in Turin and the Italian media is pushing a favourable narrative around him.
However, should Carrick wobble further than Conte’s phone may well ring.
