Jannik Schuster’s move to Brentford is now close to being completed, with a ‘fundamental agreement’ now in place.
Sky Sports Austria report that the deal for the 19-year-old is now at an advanced stage. According to their information, his move to Brentford is close to being finalised.
Brentford agreement
The outlet reports that while no contract has been signed as yet, an agreement in principle has been reached. Brentford have beaten other Premier League teams and Serie A side Coo to the signing.
The 19-year-old was reportedly impressed by Brentford’s project from the outset. He is aware of their history of being a good stepping stone for young talent. The fact that Keith Andrews’ side are also in contention for Europe is another bonus.
According to Sky’s information, the total deal, including bonuses, will be worth just over €20m. That will make Schuster the most expensive sale for an Austrian player in the history of the league.
He will surpass the previous record set by Nicolas Siewald’s move to RB Leipzig. He will also sit joint tenth for RB Salzburg’s record departures alongside Seiwald and Erling Haaland. Dominik Szoboszlai’s €36m move to RB Leipzig in 2021 holds top spot.
Where does Schuster fit at Brentford?
Whether the centre-back is seen as an immediate reinforcement for Brentford’s first team squad, or a player for the future, remains to be seen.
The Bees already have strong options in central defence, with Sepp van den Berg, Nathan Collins, Kristoffer Ajer and Ethan Pinnock to choose from.
But they are also not resistant to blooding youngsters early, and there’s clearly faith in Jannik Schuster if they’re willing to pay €20m to get him this summer.
With a deal now in place and in the final stages, all that remains is final confirmation. After that, the youngster can start to work to convince Brentford that it was money well spent.
