At this point, the Italian media are adamant that Victor Osimhen will be leaving Napoli in the summer, and Chelsea appear to be one of the favourites to land the Nigerian striker.
The Blues have long been linked with a move for the forward, and while other clubs such as Liverpool have also been touted to be in the mix from time to time, most believe it will be the Stamford Bridge side that will win the race.
Calciomercato relay some quotes from John Obi Mikel, who was speaking during the Web Summit Qatar event, and the former Chelsea midfielder revealed some information about his compatriot, suggesting a move to Anfield probably won’t be happening.
He said: “I think there is genuine interest on both sides. I am convinced that Victor wants to come to Chelsea. He obviously wants to follow in my footsteps and the footsteps of the Nigerian players who played for Chelsea, like Victor Moses and Celestine Babayaro.
“And there is London, a fantastic city: there is no comparison with Liverpool or places like that. He has so many clubs interested in him, like Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United, but I’m pushing, sending him messages, trying to make sure there is only one club in his mind: the Blues!”
While there could still be a chance that Liverpool make a move for him, it would be out of character for them, especially as their needs are elsewhere.
Chelsea, on the other hand, definitely need an out and out striker in their team, and there is a feeling they have been waiting all this time to get Osimhen.
Whether that happens remains to be seen, but with Mikel pushing in the background, likely talking up London instead of Liverpool, it seems there is only one destination in the player’s mind going forward.
