Sunderland target Alexandre Mendy returned to training with SM Caen on Tuesday, with serious doubts still hanging around his future.
As ever, it’s worth a quick recap on what’s happened with Mendy this summer: On July 19th the player went public to say he’d chosen to join Sunderland. Despite having an approach from a club in Saudi Arabia, which obviously would have meant higher wages, Mendy had been seduced by the idea of playing for the Black Cats.
He’d even watched every series of Sunderland ‘Til I Die, was hugely impressed with the club’s support, and positive about playing under manager Regis Le Bris. At the end of those statements in mid July, Mendy talked about being excited to travel to England with his family for a medical.
That’s now almost a month ago, and the only real developments since have been a representative of the player saying Caen are acting disgracefully… oh and Kylian Mbappe’s family becoming major shareholders at the French club.
Wednesday’s edition of Ouest France questions how long Mendy will actually be in training with Caen. They explain around 50 supporters went to watch training yesterday and were treated to the ‘nice surprise’ of Mendy being involved.
Fortunately, the Sunderland target, who was Ligue 2’s top scorer last season, ‘demonstrated that he had lost none of his finishing skills’.
Ouest France say ‘Sunderland is waiting for him’, but ‘Mbappe wants to keep him’.
Still in the air, then.
