Bein Sports Turkey’s respected journalist Mehmet Demirkol has spoken about the presidency race at Besiktas and it’s emerged Rangers’ Steven Gerrard could be an option as manager for the Super Lig side.
Gerrard arrived at Ibrox in the summer of 2018 and his side currently top the Scottish Premiership table.
Two weeks ago, Besiktas president Fikret Orman confirmed he will resign, and the Turkish club will pick their new chief next Sunday.
Speaking about the potential candidates, Demirkol said the new president could part ways with current manager Abdullah Avci after a shocking start to the season.
Subsequently Gerrard’s name is being circulated around the club, as he’s considered a target for one of the presidential candidates.
“I heard one of the strong candidates, Ahmet Nur Cebi, has a different name in his mind. Steven Gerrard’s name is being discussed. Also, I know Sergen Yalcin could replace Abdullah Avci if he wins the race.” he said to TV show Bein Manset, as covered by Sporx.
Gerrard’s name has also been linked with Championship side Leeds United in the English media in recent days, but the former Liverpool midfielder is likely to finish the season with Rangers given they are going for their first title in nine years.
