Piero Ausilio has been linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur in recent months and talk about the deal has returned this week.

The Italian was at Inter Milan in various capacities over more than ten years. Most recently, he was their sporting director. Differences between the two parties emerged over a renewal, as Ausilio had always signed one-year deals at the club.

Since the director wanted higher wages, no agreement was reached and links with Tottenham quickly emerged.

There was belief that talks between the two parties had been held. Now, more is emerging about Ausilio’s situation.

De Zerbi backing deal

Il Giornale – via Calciomercato – report that the move to Tottenham is still possible for Ausilio. The London club are evaluating the idea and the director’s future could indeed lie in England.

More importantly, it is Roberto De Zerbi who is keen on the move. The Italian is, in fact, sponsoring the move and has a very positive opinion about Ausilio’s skillset.

His knowledge of the Italian game will also come in handy.

Our take: Could be a huge signing

Any club that lands Ausilio will have a very important asset in hand. While working with Beppe Marotta, he helped Inter build a stable football club which has an identity. This has helped them stand out constantly in Italy, which makes them challengers for silverware regularly.

Tottenham would need that and Ausilio has also worked in situations where clubs do not always spend big. His approach is more about being intentional and clever with moves, while fixing problem areas.

De Zerbi needs moderation, as the club spent significantly – but not always sensibly. Ausilio will change that.
