Billy Gilmour joined Napoli from Brighton & Hove Albion in the summer transfer window, after weeks of haggling from the Serie A club.

The move therefore took a while to transpire but the Seagulls eventually earned €13m from the transfer.

Gilmour has played 14 times in all competitions for Napoli this season and is slowly growing in stature under Antonio Conte, who he worked under during his time at Chelsea.

In an interview with Napoli’s Youtube channel, the 23-year-old midfielder explained that he was texting teammate Scott McTominay during his last few days at Brighton.

He said, as relayed by AreaNapoli: “Scott arrived here before me, and we were texting each other, in the days when I was also hoping to move to Naples.

“When Scott told me he was on the plane to come here, all that was left to do was close my transfer. The day I arrived in Naples was something incredible. I got off the plane, ran to do the medical and then went to the stadium.”

Gilmour also went on to explain that he’s settled in very well at Napoli, thanks to his new teammates.

“I had heard about my teammates at Napoli, but I had never spoken to them. I had faced many of them with Scotland and with various clubs, and when I arrived they were very good with me. They helped me settle in and I was pleased with that.”

The midfielder also stated that he dreams of winning titles at Napoli.

“My dream as a footballer is to reach the highest levels and win trophies here in Naples. That’s what I will try to do.”

It is quite clear that Gilmour was keen on a move to the Partenopei for quite a while before he departed the Seagulls.

Brighton signed the Scotland international from Chelsea for a fee of £9m in 2022, and perhaps had to take less of a profit then they’d have otherwise liked.
