Stoke City are in the process of completing the signing Go Ahead Eagles’ Milan Smit in the winter market.

On Wednesday, ESPN NL and De Telegraaf both reported the Eredivisie side have agreed a €5.5m deal with the Potters. This will be their new club-record, surpassing the €4.5m collected from Oliver Antman’s sale to Rangers last summer.

De Telegraaf even explained the 22-year-old would undergo medical tests with Stoke City yesterday.

That didn’t happen and a fresh report from De Telegraaf now provides the latest on this case.

Go Ahead Eagels have travelled to face OGC Nice in the Europa League later today. The striker didn’t make a trip to England to carry out transfer formalities with Mark Robins’ side.

Instead, he travelled to France with the Dutch club. However, his move to Stoke City is not in danger but delayed.

The newspaper state the Championship side and Go Ahead Eagles were sorting out the final details of the operation. It wasn’t resolved at the time the latter boarded the plane to France on Wednesday morning.

Go Ahead Eagles technical director Marc van Hintum spoke about the winger’s situation yesterday and why he travelled with the squad. Oost have relayed his comments.

“With Smit, it’s still a matter of details, which is why he’s no longer training. He is going to France because there’s no agreement yet,” he said.

Van Hintum refused to confirm whether it’ll be a club-record sale but explained: “So, as a club, you can be very proud of that.”

Stoke City and Go Ahead Eagles sorted out the final details and decided it was best for Smit to skip training yesterday.

De Telegraaf state he then received the green light to travel to England to carry out medical tests. After completing these examinations, he will sign a contract until 2030.

Robins is hopeful to have Smit in the squad to face Birmingham City on Saturday.
