Newcastle United have received encouragement to sign Ivan Toney, after the Al-Ahli star left the door open to join the Premier League side under certain conditions.
The striker has enjoyed a good run in Saudi Arabia since moving from Brentford in August 2024.
Newcastle United manager Matthias Jaissle was in charge of Al-Ahli when Toney arrived at the club. The 30-year-old excelled under the German and continues to shine after the manager’s exit.
He scored 72 goals and contributed 17 assists from 93 matches under Jaissle. His overall tally is 86 goals and 19 assists, and 14 goals and two assists are from this season.
Newcastle United’s stance on Toney
The Magpies boss has summer signing Matias Fernandez-Pardo as one of his strikers, and he’s yet to score or assist. The other two, Yoane Wissa and William Osula, have a goal and an assist in the league this season.
It may not be surprising if the Tyneside club were to bring in attacking reinforcements. On Wednesday, Sport Witness covered a report from Saudi Arabia explaining that Matthias Jaissle definitely wants to sign Ivan Toney.
Another outlet, 365 Scores, contacted Newcastle United sporting director Ross Wilson for an update. He denied rumours of the German requesting to sign the Al-Ahli star, without the outlet relaying the direct comment from the official.
It isn’t the first time 365 Scores reported about the director denying a Newcastle United transfer rumour. In August, there was a claim of an agreement with Feyenoord’s Anis Hadj Moussa. The same source contacted Wilson, who denied this and their interest.
Transfer door remains open for Newcastle United
Back to Ivan Toney, an Al-Ahli source informs the outlet there’s been no verbal or formal offer from the Magpies. The Middle Eastern club also have no plans to let him leave in the winter market. He has a contract until 2028, and Transfermarkt value him at €20m.
Having enjoyed a good run under Matthias Jaissle, a source close to the player states he’s ‘completely open’ to reuniting with the former manager at St James’ Park. He will only consider Newcastle United if their proposal meets his sporting and financial aspirations.
Prior to his move to Saudi, the England international spent his entire career in the UK and now won’t be against the idea of returning to the Premier League. This leaves the door open for the Magpies.
Whether they will make advances to sign him either in January or next summer is unclear.
