Vasco da Gama are getting closer to wrapping up the signing of Matheus França, with local outlet Itatiaia Esporte reporting that the Crystal Palace forward should land in Rio de Janeiro this weekend.

The 21-year-old has already shaken hands on personal terms with Vasco, and once he arrives he’s set to go through medicals and put pen to paper.

The deal will run until June 2025 on a straight loan, without the previously discussed buying clause, while his contract with Palace stays in place until June 2028.

Palace see the move as a way for França to get regular minutes before coming back stronger to London next year.

On the Vasco side, coach Fernando Diniz and technical coordinator Felipe Loureiro were key in the talks – both spoke directly with the player, which helped convince him that this was the right step.

Although Palace had initially looked at a European loan, França’s own wish to return home and play under Diniz ended up making the difference.
