Leeds United closed a deal for Tarik Muharemovic in the summer and the move has worked out well for everyone involved.
The last 12 months or so have been very impressive for the centre-back. He joined Sassuolo permanently from Juventus in the summer of 2025, after an initial loa,n and did very well in the 2025/26 Serie A campaign.
Sport Witness tracked how he attracted interest from several clubs in the summer, with Juventus and Inter Milan previously keen. Leeds United signed him for €40m and the centre-back has already made his mark in the Premier League.
Sassuolo sporting director Francesco Palmieri has opened up about the transfer.
Player tipped for big things
The Italian spoke to Tuttomercatoweb about the Bosnia international and provided background to Leeds United landing Muharemovic.
He revealed that several clubs had stepped forward for his signature and expects the player to grow further.
“A big deal, twice over. Because it was already a big deal when we signed him from Juventus two years ago. This summer, I found myself with a lot of inquiries for a very strong player, who l’m convinced can grow even further.”
Palmieri also made it clear that Leeds United were most interested, but the move also helped Juventus. The Bianconeri had inserted a 50% sell-on clause in the deal and that eventually allowed them to sign Jhon Lucumi.
“It was a very important deal, profitable for the player but also for us. No team in Italy had shown much interest, while several clubs abroad were interested. It’s nice to close a deal like this.”
“And we also did Juventus a favour.”
Muharemovic already doing well
The 23-year-old has taken little time to adapt to English football. He has already played six times in the Premier League and has settled in very well.
That is a good indication of his qualities, which were clear at Sassuolo. Even during his early days in Turin, he had showed his strengths at a young age.
Be it his ability on the ball or off the ball, Muharemovic has thrived. In the long-term, he will prove worth the money that was spent on him. While Sassuolo can be proud of how they helped him develop, there is every chance Leeds United make a big capital gain in the future.
