Liverpool‘s cautious approach in dealing with Dominik Szoboszlai’s situation can result in him avoiding a long layoff.
The Hungary international hasn’t struggled with fitness or injury problems since joining the Premier League side from RB Leipzig in 2023. He missed 56 days in 2024 because of a hamstring problem and seven more days in 2025.
Szoboszlai has retained his place under Andoni Iraola featuring in every Liverpool fixture prior to the international break. He started four UEFA Nations League matches for the national team.
The midfielder missed the Premier League side’s 3-0 defeat to Manchester City at Anfield. Prior to this tie, Andoni Iraola confirmed a hamstring injury as a reason for his absence.
He said: “He came with an overload, he felt a tight hamstring.”
Szoboszlai to miss Liverpool’s CL clash
The Reds have travelled to Austria to face LASK in the Champions League later today. Dominik Szoboszlai didn’t make it to Andoni Iraola’s squad because of the same issue that forced him to miss the defeat to Manchester City.
Wednesday’s edition of Blikk covers the Hungarian football association’s response.
Hungary manager Marco Rossi knew the Liverpool star was overworked. This was the reason for replacing him after 80 minutes in the 1-0 win over Georgia. Liverpool will no doubt believe he should have done so earlier.
“The coaching staff had already noticed signs of fatigue and strain, as also mentioned by the Liverpool FC manager, whilst he was on international duty; indeed, it was precisely for this reason that Marco Rossi substituted Dominik Szoboszlai during the match against Georgia. Although the team captain had been under considerable strain, he returned to his club side without an injury. Incidentally, Andoni Iraola did not say anything to the contrary in his statement,” the Hungarian FA said in a press release.
Doctor explains Liverpool player’s injury situation

Blikk, who relay the FA’s statement, contacted sports doctor György Bakanek to get his views about Dominik Szoboszlai’s injury.
He is happy with the way Andoni Iraola and Liverpool are handling the 25-year-old’s situation.
Bakanek explained: “It’s probably the case that Dominik was in pain, which is why he’s sitting out a match or two now, thereby preventing his hamstring from tearing and ruling him out for six months, which shows he’s taking a cautious approach.
“This strain can be treated with massage and various remedies, and recovery is likely to take around seven to ten days.”
If the Hungarian were to be out for 10 days, he will miss at least two more matches. The weekend clash against Brentford and next week’s Champions League tie against Villarreal.
Szoboszlai may return when the Anfield club host Brighton & Hove Albion on October 25th.
