Feyenoord take on Como in the Champions League on Wednesday, and Liverpool are set to keep a close eye on Gjivai Zechiël.

The 22-year-old has come leaps and bounds in the Eredivisie over the past two seasons. In the ongoing campaign, he has found the net five times, while also adding four assists from midfield.

He has carried on from where he left off last season, when he contributed to 15 goals in the league, also featuring in the Europa League.

Now a trusted member of the Dutch side, Zechiël also started Feyenoord’s Champions League opener against Barcelona. He is expected to feature against Cesc Fabregas’ side on Wednesday and this can hand Liverpool a chance to watch him closely.

Several players to be monitored

Tuttomercatoweb report that Liverpool are expected to make midfield signings in January. They have been keeping a close eye on Zechiël for many weeks and have watched him impress at De Kuip already this season.

They are expected to do the same this week, with scouts set to be present for the Champions League tie.

Moreover, the outlet report that some Como players could also catch specific attention. While largely speculative, they feel Maximo Perrone and Lucas Da Cunha could end up being of interest to the Reds.

The two have become key players at the lakeside club, playing regularly in midfield. Como have spent a combined total of around €15m to land them and their stature has only grown since.

But Liverpool’s focus will primarily be on Zechiël, who will be hunting for his first Champions League goal.

Our take: Player’s reputation will keep growing

The Dutchman’s stock is clearly on the way up. He has now already made two appearances for the national team, coming off the bench against Serbia and Greece.

But that should also be alarming for Liverpool, who can see more clubs step forward for Zechiël. That would especially be true if he impresses in the Champions League and keep contributing to goals regularly in the league.
