Mariano Troilo’s growth at Parma hasn’t gone unnoticed, with Sunderland laying down the foundations of a summer deal.
Last week, Sport Witness covered Brentford’s interest in the defender. Those claims came from Tuttomercatoweb, who hyped up the centre-back and his performances in the ongoing campaign.
Troilo made a slow start but has become an important player for Carlos Cuesta’s side. He scored a big goal against Milan in March, having now started 15 games in 2026 alone.
The Argentine has started each of the last four Serie A games, doing well against both Inter and Napoli.
His performances are now impressing Sunderland, who are also emerging as a suitor.
Black Cats have spoken to entourage
ParmaToday have published a detailed report on the 22-year-old and they praise Troilo’s attitude and work-ethic quite. He was involved in a scuffle with Nicolo Barella at the weekend, and his tendency to not back down from a challenge is winning fans.
It is believed Sunderland have taken note of his traits on the pitch too. They have started to make enquiries with his entourage about a summer deal, with the move in an initial phase.
Parma are sitting calmly and are very happy with how Troilo has turned his season around. Many didn’t expect him to do so well in his first season in Serie A but he has made a mark. Troilo has actually replaced Giovanni Leoni, doing just as well at the back.
Parma view him as an important part of the project and only a ‘significant offer’ will trigger his transfer.
Our take: Troilo could be a good opportunity
Now the centre-back is impressing in Italy, and he’d already impressed for Club Atletico Belgrano for two years before joining Parma.
Usually, South American players find Serie A to be a suitable league for development. Troilo’s career is going down that route, with the transfer clearly helping him.
There is every chance major Serie A sides come calling for him soon. That is why Sunderland are wise to at least lay down foundations of a deal. It could prove advantageous, if the defender continues to do well in the next few months.
