Manchester City midfielders Fernando and Fernandinho (good name for a country duo) have both spoken to ESPN Brasil following the 3-1 win over Barcelona.
Both players seemed very relieved after beating Lionel Messi’s side, since it had been five games and five defeats against Barcelona before last night’s clash.
“We sought this for quite some time. Three years that City played against Barcelona and could not get this result. Today was a very special day for us, when we beat a very tough team, with great players. So it was very important,” Fernando told the reporter João Castello Branco.
Looking for long term success, Fernandinho revealed he’s happy with the team’s change of mentality and hopes it helps them to achieve bigger things in future. “We conceded a goal to a team like Barcelona and were able to make a comeback playing in a good way, controlling the game, especially in the second half. This mental strength is what we’re looking to put in our team. To really grow, in all aspects,” he said.
“Of course, we’re at the start of the work, we have young players, players who are coming only now. So it’s important that we build this mindset, for a team that wants to be a winner in the future, you already have to start that way.”
With the win, Manchester City are now in second place of Group F. Barcelona have nine points, City have seven, Borussia Monchengladbach come with four and Celtic are at the bottom with only two.
Pep Guardiola’s side will now face Borussia Monchengladbach away on November 23rd and Celtic at home on December 6th. A win against the German side would already assure the English club qualification for the knockout stage.
