Matheus Nunes’ transfer from Sporting to Wolverhampton Wanderers was today recalled at the Portuguese club.
The reason for that is the situation of Lions’ midfielder Manuel Ugarte, whose agent this week made revealing comments regarding his potential departure to Liverpool.
Sporting manager Ruben Amorim today held a press conference (via Mais Futebol), and when asked if they’re working to hold the Uruguayan player, he mentioned Nunes’ transfer to Wolves last summer.
“At the time, Matheus Nunes was completely different. The player had one opinion, the coach another, the president another and the manager another and we didn’t have time to do anything. It had a great impact on the team and the way the process was conducted is what made me angry at the time and it took time to recover from that,” said Amorim.
“Here there is only one Sporting and it will be done differently, because everything has already been clarified. The most important ones will have to leave by clause, there’s also the importance of the Champions League happening or not. Remember, also, when Matheus Nunes left, that we had sold Palhinha. We sold Matheus and Dani was injured three weeks earlier. We lost three midfield players all of a sudden and it wasn’t just Matheus leaving, it was the impact. Suddenly. It is difficult to recover.”
Wolves had to be very insistent about Nunes’ arrival at Molineux last summer. The club were said to be interested in the midfielder for over a year, and it took intense talks to convince him to make the switch, which was finally agreed with Sporting for a fee worth €45m plus €5m.
The reason why Amorim is so angry about the scenario involving Ugarte is because the season is still rolling and his agent already claimed the player is expected to leave, with the situation probably being sorted in a couple of weeks. Newspaper Correio da Manhã even features a story today saying Sporting have forbidden any talks and advised Liverpool of UEFA sanctions.
