Liverpool midfielder Fabinho has urged fans to ‘forget’ about last season as they seek to win the Premier League title this year.
The Reds have never won a Premier League title, with their last league success coming in 1990, two years before the birth of the Premier League.
Last year was the closest they have come to ending their title drought as they finished one point behind Manchester City in one of the closest and most thrilling title races in recent history.
This season Liverpool sit top of the table and six points clear of champions City after 11 games, sparking hope that they can go one step further than last year.
It’s been a continuation of last year, but Fabinho insists players must forget last season and focus on the now.
“We are Liverpool and we have a very good team. We know our quality and we go for everything,” he told El Periódico.
“We don’t talk about last year or what we conquered. This is a new season and we haven’t won anything. We must forget what happened.”
Sunday sees Liverpool meeting rivals Manchester City for the first time this season in a game that could have huge ramifications for this year’s title race.
A win for Liverpool would put them nine points clear at the top of the table, an amount many feel would practically hand them the title.
Fabinho is certainly in that camp and says that despite it only being November, it is not too early in the campaign for that to be the case.
“It is not too early. It is certainly a very important match,” he added.
“We are the first two teams in the league. This Sunday will see a good meeting.
“I don’t care about the team Manchester City puts out. We study how they play and we want to propose our style. We have Anfield. We will try to play as always, imposing the rhythm.”
