Liverpool have identified KRC Genk goalkeeper Lucca Brughmans as a new target ahead of deadline day.
That’s according to Het Laatste Nieuws, who report ‘Liverpool are serious’ about the 18-year-old.
Why Liverpool want new stopper
Andoni Iraola has Alisson Becker as his No.1 and the Brazil international has been the first choice since arriving at Anfield from AS Roma in 2018.
Giorgi Mamardashvili is his backup, with Freddie Woodman, Harvey Davies and Vitezslav Jaros as the other goalkeepers at Anfield. The latter has been on the sidelines with an injury since February.
After the end of last season, the Italian media reported of the possibility of Mamardashvili going out on loan this summer.
The Georgia international is still at the club but can leave before tomorrow’s deadline.
Liverpool take action
Faced with the possibility of Giorgi Mamardashvili moving elsewhere, even on loan, the Reds want to sign a new goalkeeper. This is where Lucca Brughmans comes into the picture and the Premier League side are serious about him.
The Belgian newspaper reports Liverpool have officially approached the Jupiler Pro League side to register their interest. They want him to replace the Georgian and become Alisson Becker’s deputy this season.
There’s no mention of the transfer formula, fee, KRC Genk’s stance on letting him leave or whether the youngster is open to this move.
Journalist Sacha Tavolieri reports the operation will cost €35m. The stopper is undergoing medical tests with the Reds as a ‘precaution due to tight schedule’. He will stay at Anfield if the Georgian were to leave. Otherwise, he will return to Genk on loan.
The Belgium U19 international joined Genk’s academy in 2022 and made his way into the first team debut in April. Last season, he kept five clean sheets and conceded seven goals from 11 matches.
On July 5th, Genk offered him a new contract until 2030, and Transfermarkt value him at €4m. He has played four matches this season, keeping one clean sheet and conceding eight goals.
The Anfield club have formally registered their interest and have to rush as there’s less than 48 hours left to sign Brughmans.
