Napoli are currently fearing interest from Premier League clubs in Kobbie Mainoo, believing that could scupper their own attempts for the Manchester United midfielder.
The 20-year-old has been struggling for prominence this season under Ruben Amorim. The manager has repeatedly said he sees Mainoo as a player to compete with Bruno Fernandes rather than work with him.
Given Fernandes is the captain and an almost ever present, that’s made Mainoo’s position extremely difficult. As a cruel twist of fate, on one of the few occasions the Portugal international has been injured in his career, Mainoo has also picked up a knock.
Napoli and others have been interested for months, and it’s no surprise to now see Turkish interest.
Saturday’s edition of Sabah has a splash on Beşiktaş making contact to take the Manchester United youngster on loan.
The Turkish club want Mainoo on an 18-month loan deal and have contacted the Premier League club. Should they get an opening from the Red Devils then they’ll push forward and presumably try to convince the player.
Kobbie Mainoo desire is key
Moving to Turkey at this stage of his career would be an unusual step for Mainoo. Given that, it may not be his priority right now, but Beşiktaş certainly have their attractions.
At this point there’s no indication of finances. Beşiktaş are doing initial work and negotiations would come once it’s established a transfer is possible.
Mainoo has a Manchester United contract lasting until 2027, with a further year club option. A renewal would likely be needed to make a loan feasible.
