Sunderland have received encouragement to launch a fresh attempt to sign Igor Paixão, after he talked about his desire to leave Marseille.
The forward left Feyenoord for the Ligue 1 side in 2025 and finished his debut season with 12 goals and seven assists.
In the summer window, he attracted interest from the Premier League, where Sunderland the main contender.
Régis Le Bris’ side saw the French club reject their initial offer. That didn’t put them off and they returned with an improved bid. However, a move never materialised and he’s still at the Ligue 1 club.
Sunderland came close to signing
Last month, Sport Witness covered a report from France explaining that the Black Cats were 10 minutes away from finalising the Brazilian’s transfer for €30m before the French club blocked the sale.
Marseille president Stéphane Richard has talked about his role in stopping Igor Paixão’s move to Sunderland.
He said: “Paixão, as I see it, is a great player. I felt it was my duty to stop the sale efforts, when the value of the sports project, this team’s ability to put on a quality show and attract large audiences, was truly threatened. I campaigned strongly for him to stay.”
Last week, the attacker discussed Sunderland’s summer interest and the possibility of moving to England in the future.
“It’s also a dream to play in the Premier League. We’re going to have a good season so that next time other clubs can come in. Then we can see about taking a bigger step. Of course, it has to be good for me and for the club,” Paixão explained.
Why he didn’t consider Sunderland in summer
On Sunday, Marseille secured a 2-0 win over Troyes. Prior to the clash, Canal+ spoke to Igor Paixão and Ouest-France have relayed his comments.
The outlet points out Sunderland, in particular, came close to securing the 26-year-old’s services during the last window.
On his decision to stay, he added: “It’s a special moment, but the club’s situation made me stay. I thought it best for them; even if they hadn’t sold me, they wouldn’t have been able to replace a player who is important to them.”
The South American has a contract until 2030. However, his plan is to not continue with the Ligue 1 side beyond this season.
“Winter transfer window? I don’t know, it’s difficult because in January the teams are already formed. There’s a better chance I will leave next summer,” Paixão concluded.
He’s already talked about his dream of playing in the Premier League. The player has now publicly expressed his desire to change clubs. This gives Sunderland a new opportunity to sign him in 2027.
The Brazilian has to maintain his form to attract clubs, including Régis Le Bris’ side.
