There’s growing discontent among some Belgium football fans. The country’s golden generation is largely considered to be failing, and there was shock when the country were knocked out of Euro 2016 by Wales.
Belgium had really geared up for Euro 2016, supermarkets in the country had whole aisles dedicated to the effort. Fans could buy wigs in Belgium’s colours, several types, party packs, sandals, every item of clothing imaginable, and there were all kinds of things for children to collect.
It was a huge chance for the golden generation to shine, and they simply didn’t manage that in neighbouring France, so disappointment was obviously expected.
Losing 2-0 at home to Spain on Thursday night was another disappointment, and fans booed their heroes.
Tottenham star Jan Vertonghen doesn’t sound especially happy about the situation, and Het Nieuwsblad quote him as saying: “We knew in advance that the stadium would not be sold out. We were also booed, we were a little surprised.
“That simply means that the standard and the expectations of the fans have changed compared to the past. The Belgian fans now expect us to dominate and win all the games, but it’s not so simple.
“I myself would never sit in a stand and boo my own team. But I understand that the fans are unhappy and to boo us is their full right.”
